Eagles lose 16-13
Well it appears we've settled in to a nice little losing streak here. That makes 3 in a row and the flaws in this team are painfully obvious at this point.
Like 2 virgins trying to have sex
All credit to my brother for that description of today's game. I really feel for any neutral observer that was forced to actually watch that game. The game ended in a somewhat exciting manner but it really was an awful game to watch. Two basically below average offenses making one mistake after another... Certainly if you were a fan of kicking you got a nice treat today with lots of punts and several very nice ones! Plus plenty of field goals! It's bad enough that the Eagles can't win, but they can't even entertain us.
The offensive problem
So it's not the running game that's the problem. Westbrook had a fine day on the ground running for 116 yards averaging almost 6 per carry. The playcalling wasn't really a problem either, although that run on 3rd and 5 didn't make much sense. The run/pass ratio was 28/34(including 4 McNabb scrambles). Not a big deal there. Pressure wasn't really the problem, I thought McNabb had plenty of time today and the times he was sacked were all after he had ran out of the pocket. McNabb's injuries weren't an issue since he was moving better than I've seen him move all year.
The problem was Donovan McNabb was not seeing any open receivers. Whether he was not seeing them because none were open or whether he just wasn't finding the open guys I do not know. A few times FOX showed replays where they showed one or two guys covered but we never actually saw. Maybe if someone was at the game they could give us their thoughts on that. The one thing I do wonder though is how there were open receivers the last two weeks but none this week. The Giants were without both starting safeties and most Giant fans will tell you it's not as if they have shutdown corners anyway. Someone needs to answer the question why the QB was looking downfield and not seeing anything. It's the most important question facing this offense and maybe this team headed into this offseason
No interceptions, surprised?
Before this game I said something had to give. You had a QB leading the NFL in picks facing a team dead last in picks. Well, something did give and the Eagles weren't able to pick off Manning even once. To be fair, the defense did force some turnovers in the form of two Brandon Jacobs fumbles. Jacobs in general had a day he'd like to forget. However, in the end it was the pass that beat them with Plaxico Burress once again doing basically whatever he wanted against the Eagles secondary. Pressure-wise, the Eagles were able to bring it in the first half but not the second. It's wasn't an altogether poor job by the defense but it was typically inconsistent.
Special Teams, sigh
I really can't repeat myself enough about how hapless this unit is. Once again the Eagles return game does absolutely nothing and the opposition has a nice kick return of 35 yards a nice punt return of 27 yards. They don't tackle well, they don't take good angles, they don't block well... There's really nothing that they do do well. There really needs to be a top to bottom overhaul.

Is it just me
I might be talking nonsense and I am sure Andrew will provide mountains of statistical evidence to prove I am wrong. But it seems like FB is in there a lot.
As for the game, bad teams find ways to loose to teams who don't deserve to win. Before this week I used to convince myself we were a few fielded punts and a 97-yard drive away from being a decent team. Now I ask myself if we are a few plays against Minn and Wash away from bing 3-10? Wow... thats depressing.

Stats
If you want strategic tendencies, wait until next June when Footballoutsiders.com publishes Pro Football Prospectus 2008. They'll give you all that data. You could also write Aaron Schatz at Footballoutsiders.com and ask him if he'll divulge the data you want.

What?
"When McNabb is in the WRs can never get open. but when Garcia and even Mr. INT Feeley steps in somehow the WRs get the ball........ McNabb still holds onto the ball too long trying to make something happen when there is nothing there. He still sucks at throwing the short ball."
I understand your frustration. I feel you. "When Mcnabb is in WR's never get open" Not really true. If you look at Mcnabb's stats and track record he is a elite Qb that is having a ruff year. It's happen to the best QB's. But ask yourself this question. When the Eagles were great last season with the MVP play from Mcnabb what did you think of him? If you can remember Mcnabb was unstoppable until about 2 weeks before he blew out his knee. I think that we should give him a break. What would the Packers be doing right now if Farve was sent packing? Not 11-2 and division champs. He played like ass for at least 4 years in a row. Why can't we have fans that stay loyal? Because most Philly fans are neophytes to football and have no clue WTF they are seeing and talking about. I am going to laugh when Kolb isn't as good as they project him to be. Because most Qb prospects never live up to expectations.
Give D money a break. It's not like we could win the superbowl anyway. The AFC is way better than the NFC this year. But sadly you guys will run him out of town and Mcnabb will end up in Chitown and win a Championship.....without us.

Offense is impotent!
Dave, good article. As for your question about what's wrong with the eagles offense, you answered it pretty well in your article: "Giants defense had this offense figured out after the first drive.......the scheme sure seems to have been read by defensive coordinators and, ugh, is all I can say." You see, there's something called film, which opposing teams watch before they play the eagles, that enables them to figure out our tendencies. Apparently Andy Reid and Marty Mornhinweg have never heard of this incredible advance in technology.
The offense is stale. Archaic. There is too little variability/variation. Apparently our offensive coaching staff is immune to change. We too often in crunch time, must-convert situations go to plays that we have used extensively in the past and that have been seen by other teams on film time and time again. Newsflash...they know what's coming.
It seems our offensive coaches come into each game with a set, scripted game plan, and are extremely reluctant to deviate from this script, regardless of what the reality is on the field. They try the same or similar things over and over in hopes apparently, that our luck will change sooner or later and they will begin to work. I reference the Giants 12 sack game from earlier in the year as an example. No changes were made in-game to a protection scheme that was absolutely horrendous. I also reference the refusal to consistently put the receivers in motion in the first Redskins game of the year, when we kept getting cover 0 looks and 1 on 1 coverage by the redskins d on our WRs, who were having difficulties getting off the line easily from a standstill. We do a terrible job of moving the pocket, etc. Watch the Dallas offensive sets and playcalling and you'll see the exact opposite of what we do.
Fellow eagles fans, Its not about the run/pass ratio, its not about the QB either (except for Feeley of course). The system is set up for failure, regardless of who is in the pocket.
I'm also tired of people blaming the defense for a lot of these losses. The number one defense in points allowed per game in the NFL since 2002 is Baltimore at roughly 17 points a game. When our defense holds teams to 16 points, they've done a pretty damn good job. The offense needs to return the favor. The special teams of course are in no way special, but that goes without saying.
The best offenses in the NFL are those that find a way to effectively keep the opposing defense guessing each week; those that disguise what they do very well; those that change the playcalling to suit certain situations. You ask what needs to be changed, I believe it has to do with the offensive coaching staff. IMHO, Andy Reid is an excellent GM, but a terrible playcaller, especially in the last 2 mins of a big game. He needs to either change his way of thinking about offense and stop being so stubborn, or stick to strict GM duties, and appoint a competent OC. Otherwise, at this rate, we will never get over the hump with Reid making the decisions on offense.
One last thing, despite having seen a soft shell defense multiple times in the past, we're still not adequately prepared for it. New England played that 2 wks ago, they played it in the superbowl against us. And yet McNabb states in the press conference after the game against the giants that the reason it was so difficult to find openings was because of the soft shell? Get out of here!

Ok
As for the other plays, we have to seperate the call from what happened. If McNabb ends up checking down to a dump off in the flat it doesn't mean that was the play call. If I remember the play you're talking about he clearly checked down a few routes before he went to the flat.

Reggie
The Eagles then lost a yard on second down and got stuffed on third -- and punted
Did this infuriate anyone else?
Reggie, you are not a #1. You aren't even close.
